From the end of the 8th century, the Vikings from Scandinavia regularly appeared in Great Britain and on the European mainland with their longships for raids. These ocean-going, 20 meter long battleships could be entered or exited at the bow and stern of the ship. Thanks to a shallow draft of just under 1.50 meters, the Vikings could also sail or row on rivers and thus attack areas deep inland. With the around 20 knots fast and agile battleships, also known as kites, the Vikings penetrated as far as Iceland, Greenland and even North America, as evidenced by settlement finds.
